In Person vs. Online Learning
While many of these factors listed below are present in an in person classroom, this year there is the added challenge of navigating them in the online setting. Many of these like screen sharing and sound sharing capabilities that our past spaces have set up for us, this year directors and teachers need to navigate that on their own devices. While information will be provided that details the use of these new components, it is still an added conversation so that directors are prepared for all of these parts and how they are integrated throughout an online class.
Listed below are items that will be taken into consideration now that we are operating in a fully virtual format. There will be more detail and explanation of the following points in the audio file attached below each section.
- Breakout Rooms
- Allows students to interact with one another at a smaller capacity. Great place for activities that may require more verbal responses from students.
- Sharing Screen and Sound
- Sharing our screen allows us to provide specific images for the students and sharing sounds helps to eliminate any lag in the music.
- Person Observing
- It is important to have someone present on the zoom to monitor the students and to help teachers if there needs to be confrontation about behavior in class.
- Repetition
- Since we will not be in person with the students it is important that we review and go over material more consistently to ensure that the students understand the movement they are given.
- Break Time
- Being in front of a screen for too long can lead to difficulties focusing on material. By providing breaks throughout the class this can help keep the engagement levels of the students up.
- Collaboration with Other Prism Projects
- Through our work with Jeremy Love from Prism Project New Orleans we are working to set aside weeks in our schedule that allows us to collaborate with their teachers and students.
- Online Show vs. In Person Show
- This year we will be working throughout the whole semester to capture material that will then be compiled to create the final performance that will showcase all of the performers hard work.
