A "Tyler" Talk

On the question of "Why are we still so bad at addressing mental health in the dance industry?"

“Anxiety is an irrational sense of fear that pairs perfectly with perfectionism. Most, if not all, ballet dancers will feel anxious from time to time. In fact, the psychologists we spoke to said it is one of the most common reasons dancers come to them for treatment. While a dash of nerves before you go onstage can add electricity to your performance, anxiety can kill your confidence and even limit your ability to live your life normally if it goes unchecked. In a field that's filled with stressful situations—like casting, audition jitters, contract renewals, mounting bills and stage fright—it's important to learn how to identify anxiety, evaluate the seriousness and take steps to cope with it before it holds you back.” (McGuire)

Who's behind the work?

Tyler Parnella grew up in Carmel, Indiana. She has been dancing since the age of 2 and has a focus in ballet. Tyler is now a senior with Ball State University. While studying dance she has also learned about her passion for mental health. For the past few years she has slowly started to research it more and more, since she struggles with it herself. This is how her project came about. She wanted to inform her community on mental health and how it is barely talked about within dance. Tyler is happy that she got to share her love and passion for breaking the stigma of mental health within dance and hopes she reaches the hearts and minds of others.
